Exploring the Imperial City of Cusco and its main attractionss:  Cusco is a historic city in southeastern Peru and was once the capital of the Inca Empire. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most popular tourist destinations in South America. Cusco is famous for its well-preserved colonial architecture, indigenous culture, and proximity to the famous Inca ruins of Machu Picchu.

  One of the most popular tourist attractions in Cusco is the Inca ruins of Sacsayhuaman. The site is located just a few kilometers from the city center and features impressive megalithic walls made of massive stones weighing up to 200 tons. The ruins are believed to have been a fortress and religious center for the Incas.

Another must-visit attraction in Cusco is the Qorikancha Temple. This was once the most important temple in the Inca Empire and was dedicated to the sun god Inti.   Day 3   Journey Through Time and Tradition: Exploring the Mystical Maras Moray and Its Salt Mines in Cusco

Moray from the Quechua word Amoray means corn harvest, the archaeological complex of Moray is located at 3500 m.a.s.l. and is surrounded by mountains so the climate that is created is both temperate and dry. Perfect for agriculture, Moray is a 38 kilometers northeast from Cusco city and dates from the Inca era.

  This series of platforms arranged in concentric circles on four funnels functioned as an agricultural research center but also had political and religious function. These platforms allowed to grow more than 250 species of vegetables so it served as an Inca agricultural laboratory to experiment with their crops. The investigations do not specify with certainty whether during the colonial era from 1532 the platforms of Moray were built. The truth is that only in 1932 the expedition Shirppe Johnson’s flew over the place discovering the existence of platforms , then covered by dense vegetation .

  Continuing with the tour, we cannot definitely ignore the Maras Salt Flats which are at 3000 m.a.s.l. These salt mines are as old as the Tahuantinsuyo empire itself.

The sun inclement forges the evaporation of the water, leaving salt crystals that are then harvested with a piece of wood with which salt is scraped. It is then placed in baskets to remove excess water.

Aguas Calientes is only a couple of kilometers away from Machu Picchu as the crow flies but it takes a bus about 20 minutes to climb the narrow, steep zigzagging dirt track that connects the two.
